PNG is a lossless format, which makes it the right target when you need a clean copy that won’t degrade further. Converting a JPG to PNG is common when a tool or platform specifically requires PNG, when you’re about to edit an image and want to avoid stacking JPG compression, or when you need crisp edges without the fuzzy artefacts JPG leaves around text and sharp lines.

What conversion can and can’t do
Converting to PNG stops further quality loss, but it can’t undo compression that already happened: any artefacts baked into the original JPG remain. Think of it as freezing the image at its current quality in a lossless container, ready for editing or archiving.
For photographs, the resulting PNG will usually be larger than the JPG (that’s the cost of lossless). For flat-colour graphics, logos and screenshots, PNG is often both smaller and sharper than JPG.
When to use it
- Before editing — work in PNG so repeated saves don’t degrade the image.
- When a system demands PNG — some upload fields and design tools only accept it.
- For graphics — logos and UI assets look cleaner as PNG.
Tip
If your goal is a small file that still supports transparency, convert to WebP instead of PNG — it’s much smaller.
